HMSI Progress FY’12-13 and Outlook for FY’13-14

As the Only Honda in Indian Two-wheeler industry, Honda Motorcycle & Scoter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) has enjoyed overwhelming success and consistent growth. All HMSI products addressed the varied needs of Indian 2Wheeler market and made a strong impact in their respective categories. Brand Honda connected and communicated with Indian customers while setting new benchmarks during the fiscal.

FY 2012-13: Year of phenomenal 31% Growth

Business Performance

  • HMSI achieved record breaking sales of 27.54 lac units against 21.07 lac units.
  • As the Fastest Growing 2Wheeler Company in India, HMSI grew a phenomenal 31% against the subdued 2Wheeler industry growth of 2% during the fiscal.
  • HMSI witnessed a significant 4% point jump in its domestic market share to 19%. As a result, HMSI is today the 2nd largest 2Wheeler Company in Indian two-wheeler market.
  • Defying industry trend, HMSI gained market share in every segment in FY’12-13 compared to last fiscal. While motorcycle segment sales in India dropped 0.13%, HMSI motorcycle sales grew exponentially at 39%. Growing at healthy 16%, Honda also increased its Leadership in automatic scooter market, in comparison to 14% growth of domestic automatic scooter industry.
  • Growing rapidly, we crossed the 12 million happy customers’ mark in March’13. 

India becomes Global Innovation Hub for Honda

  • In a first ever across all operations globally, Honda established the new Technical Center in HMSI Manesar facility in October 12.
  • Technical Center combines integrated system of DEBQ (Design, Engineering, BOP/Purchase and Quality) under one roof to create a globally optimal operating system that advances local development of higher quality product at low cost.

Product Introduction

  • FY’13 saw faster introduction of advanced models which addressed customer needs. These include launch of Honda’s first mass model for India – Dream, Yuga in May’12.
  • Honda reinforced its leadership in ATSC segment in January’13 with the launch of revolutionary Honda Eco Technology promising Dream Mileage of 60kmpl (An industry first) in Activa, Dio and Aviator.
  • Strengthening presence in 150cc motorcycle segment, Honda launched all new CB Trigger in March’13.

Network Expansion

  • Reaching closer to customers, HMSI expanded its sales & service network to over 1950 outlets (includes 654 Dealers, 670 Branches/Sub dealers and 626 service set-ups) across India.
  • New Zonal offices were inaugurated at Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bhopal, Mohali and Bhubaneswar for amassing local market intelligence, strategizing and implementing regional approach faster.

Moving Ahead as ‘Only Honda’

  • Aligning with Honda’s global vision and recognizing India as center of global 2Wheeler business for coming times, HMSI adopted Honda’s global brand slogan ‘The Power of Dreams’ in India.
  • In India where a billion people carry dreams in their hearts, the spirit of The Power of Dreams has been brought alive by Honda’s India specific Brand Identity Sach Kardenge Sapne” and Brand association with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar.
  • Aggressive promotion through TVC & print media.

Fun, Safety & Environment

  • In January’13, Honda entered into an MoU with Dept. of Science & Technology (Govt. of Rajasthan) for adopting its 1st ever Traffic Park in Jaipur to spread safety promotion in Rajasthan.
  • Expanding motorsports in India, Honda brought racing excitement in India with five rounds of Honda One Make race, special Honda Racing Training by Moto GP riders of Japan. Taking Indian riders to global racing map, Honda also sponsored 2 riders for the Asia Dream Cup in 2012.

HMSI wins 15 prestigious Awards

  • Honda products received an overwhelming 15 prestigious recognitions in FY’12-13. This includes 9 prestigious awards for products including ‘India Design Mark’ for Dream Yuga & Dio by Indian Design Council, 4 ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ awards and 2 awards for promoting motorsports in India.

FY 2013-14: Year of Raising the bar by Leadership in all fronts

Business Plan

  • In FY 2013-14, Honda is confident to aggressively grow 43% and sell 39.3 lac units over FY’13.

Production Expansion

  • To further the meet increasing customer demand with new speed, Honda is slated to start operations at 3rd plant in Karnataka by first quarter of FY’13-14.

New Products

  • Committed to expanding Joy of customers, HMSI will continue to introduce new 2Wheelers and refresh existing products based on Customers changing expectations from Honda.

Network Expansion

  • Looking at demographics of its valued customers, Honda will rapidly deepen its market penetration by adding 500 outlets & expanding network to 2500 sales & service touch-points across India by FY’14 end.

Brand Promotion

  • Honda will continue to focus on Fun, Safety and Environment activities in FY’13-14.
